the eyes of billy mars

Posted on 11. Feb, 2009 by Victor in amazing!, best of v-hold, bruno

Way back in the late nineties, I was definitely the guy who liked to have fun. Gay fun, if you know what I mean and I know you do. Things have obviously changed and the time spent in bars and their darkened backrooms is a distant memory. I remember on Sunday afternoon meeting this guy named Billy. He was new in town and we flirted a bit, had some fun and then became what I refer to as “bar friends”. We’d see each other out from time to time, play a little catch up, share a drink and then be on our way.

There went a long period of time when I didn’t see Billy out much at all. It would never occur to me until the next time I’d see him at a bar. “Holy shit, dude. It’s been forever!” and we’d catch up again, introduce our new boyfriends and chat a bit. During one of those long stints of not seeing each other my friend Pat mentioned that he had met a guy named Billy. We compared notes and sure enough it was the same guy. Then Pat reveals to me something kind of strange and wonderful about this “bar-friend”. It turns out that Billy is some sort of psychic. I was like, “No way!” and Pat responded, “Yes, he really is – he has these premonitions and he’s usually right.” That led to some school girl giggling between us about Billy being able to read minds and how great that must be. Pat had joked and said the next time we see him we should have him pick our drinks while we sent him the message telepathically.

Turns out the next time I would see Billy was in the summer of 2006. It’s the Dore Alley Street fair and Tony and I were really living it up because we had finished up our adoption paperwork and knew that these next few street fairs may be our last for a while if we were chosen to adopt. We are hanging out in the front section of The Powerhouse and our pal Carlton is working the bar and feeding us drinks and shots. Suddenly, I see Billy come in the front entrance. He eventually moves towards us and we chat and laugh and talk about the fair. Then I mention to him that Tony and I finished our adoption paperwork and are hoping to adopt soon. Billy looks me in the eyes, pauses for a second and then says, “You will have two kids.” very matter-of-factly. I said, “Well, we hope that will happen eventually!” and Billy responded, “It will. Don’t worry.” We then got off the subject and finished up chatting and he eventually moved off to the back of the bar.

As you could imagine, when I got home I excitedly told Tony about the whole back story that led up to this moment. We both chose to take it with a grain of salt but it did add to our positive energy towards eventually adopting. Summer turns into fall and then that November 22nd, Bruno comes home with us to stay.

The next time I see Billy is in the fall of 2008 at Pottery Barn in the Castro. Tony, Bruno and I are doing some pre-holiday shopping and I run into Billy. Again, it’s the “hey, how ya doin’” catch up conversation. He gets to meet Bruno, who is now walking and talking. Then its happy holidays and we’re off again.

A few months ago Tony and I had started to talk seriously about the whole “shit or get off the pot” feeling we had with adopting a second kid. We had filled out half of the paperwork in a year’s time. Bruno was just about to change from daycare to pre-school. Money was getting tight. We were not necessarily giving up – but we needed to be more serious. I know I was starting to think that we could be running out of time. Bruno was potty trained, to go through diapers all over again – I don’t know…

A month ago for some strange reason I started going over the whole Billy story in my head and I remember “you know, Billy said we’re going to have two kids.” Sarcastically I said to myself, “well, that ain’t gonna happen.”

Two days later, late Friday night. Tony is sorting through his email on the kitchen computer and I am in the living room playing video games. “VICTOR, COME IN HERE!” he shouts as he points to his email message list:

she has the same mother as Bruno and the social worker says that it’s the same father, too… though I want to see some proof of that because we have the dad’s name with Bruno’s paperwork. But if so, what a great thing for them – two blood related sibs getting to grow up together!

Great news. Good luck with everything. We have a 3 year old adopted daughter. I have ended up being the hair stylist, which surprised her Papa and me both. We figured he would be the hair guy, but I’m just better at it. Hair is a new challenge. I would be happy to share tips with you. After 9 months I’m pretty good. It helps that she is a very patient little girl and we have various tricks of the trade to keep her still for the long hair braiding sessions.

We are a little scared about the hair-do’s. Fortunately there are a lot a hair shops that specialize in black hair. I think we are going to start with the asymmetrical shroom.
