Dear Victor,
I'd like to start spying on my neighbors across the street. It's not far,
but I need some assistance. Should I choose a pair of binoculars or a
low-end telescope? If I go with the binoculars, what type/power should I
get? I don't understand what all those numbers mean.
- Nearsighted in Nebraska
dear NiN,
it is now our duty as americans to spy on our neighbors so i commend you on your patriotism. since you don't want the person in question to see you i would suggest you use binoculars rather than a large telescope. as with all things in the gay world, bigger is better, so try to go for the strongest magnification.
i would suggest you do your spying at night with your face painted black and a blanket covering you from head to toe. also be careful about light reflecting off of the front lenses. if this should happen, your disguise should be sufficient enough that the person being spied upon would think that Grimace has taken residence across the way and is doing research for Donald Trump.
and about those funny numbers: a binocular is often specified by an expression such as “7×35” or “8×50”—the first number indicates how many times the binocular magnifies an object and the second number is the diameter of either objective lens in millimeters. the size of an objective lens is a measure of how much light it can gather for effective viewing.
suspiciously yours,
victor

feeling kind of crappy today, so for lunch i decided to browse the local strip mall near my office. went to good guys and drooled over the new hdtv's with widescreens. jeez, it is amazing how sharp the picture is on those sets. then i remembered that grand theft auto:vice city was released today, so i ran up to the toys-r-us. i noticed another middle aged guy going towards the store. then i noticed a bunch of guys all heading for the videogame aisle, each of them gaining speed (including myself). we all stop in front of the game wall and scan. i found it first, and pulled a tag to pay for it. soon there were about 15 guys all reaching in and grabbing. it was so funny because there wasn't a kid in sight. so now my evening will be filled with blowing away hookers and drug dealers, stealing cars and listening to the hot 80's soundtrack.

update from the anniversary: it was wonderful. tony brought me to dinner, this great little french restaurant on one of the side streets at union square. we had drinks at the little bar before our table was ready. tony was really quiet and fidgety. finally he said "this is going to drive me crazy if i don't do this now" and he pulled out a little blue box that contained my diamond ring from tiffany & co. he said he was so nervous that he felt like he was going to get sick and wanted to give it to me because he wouldn't be able to enjoy dinner. it was really sweet and the ring is gorgeous!
then it was off to see la boheme which was amazing. i have never been to an opera (yes, i know that this version isn't technically true opera) i enjoyed it immensely. the second act is like walking into the movie moulin rouge - it was so spectacular that the audience cheered as soon as the lights came up. i want to buy the dvd now. if you get a chance to see this in ny, do it.

i just got off the phone with my sister and she had a weird story about my parents to tell me. i guess she was talking to her friend kenny last night and he mentioned that my mother had told him that if she was to die that she didn't want kenny to tell us. talk about dramatic - now you know where i get it from. she's too much. i guess she also told him something that she made him promise not to tell us. now my sis and i are wondering if she's dying or what. but he did say it wasn't bad news. it's really manipulative on her part, because she knows damn well that he'd tell us. sheesh. both my sister and i suddenly thought that perhaps it could be that they are going to adopt another kid. i think that would be even scarier, because that poor child would be raised in a christian home. i guess maybe they figure they threw away the three kids that didn't "fit" into their lives (my sister, me and a child they aborted after my sister) and now can have another chance at getting it right. or wrong, that is.

tony spent the evening cataloguing all of his radko & polonaise ornaments in excel. he also put in a page of my dept. 56 houses. now i have six thanks to my winning bid on ebay. that's it for this year. except for accessories like snow and trees and stuff. i'm thinking about getting a train too. enough already.
not too much going on at the moment. work is really busy because both my manager and my it co-worker are out this week. i like being really busy at work, because the day just flies by.
cruddy weather outside today. very gray and looks like rain.maybe i'll make a pot of soup tonight for dinner.

saw a couple movies over the weekend. first was punch-drunk love on the imax (?) it was so good. i do have a hard-on for pt anderson's directing style, so maybe i'm a little biased. but i thought it was great. tense, funny and sweet right at the end. and a short one (90 minutes) for him. adam sandler was really convincing as a hen-pecked brother of 7 sisters. tony felt that the movie was disturbing. i can understand why a little bit, but i like that sort of thing.
the second was a documentary called hell house. it's about this haunted house in texas that instead of showing monsters and serial killers they show the "real" horrors of not becoming a christian: suicide, drug abuse, AIDS, homosexuality, abortion and the other things they think are sinful. we went with my sister jen and kelly. it was a strange thing seeing the movie because the whole theater was gasping at the stupidity of the people and laughing at the kooky way a born-again acts - but my sister and i felt weird because that was our lives for the past 18 years flashing across the screen. i couldn't help but feel so much pain for the teens in that film. they were all so sad and hating their lives, yet putting on the mask of christianity and marching forward. i guess it's true that misery loves company. it also made us happy because it reminded us that we were stronger than the cult and able to change. a lot of those poor people will never be strong enough to get out of there and that is truly hell on earth.

so last night tony and i went to a special event at the glass pheasant, which is a christopher radko starlight store. bill rhodes (who i believe is christopher's beau) was there showing off the ornaments and signing them. he was very charming and tony and i spoke with him for a while. then we bought another ornament and had him sign it to us. cheesy and cute, now tony and i have our very own special ornament.

queen with a collection: beware!
remember a couple posts ago i was talking about christmas and collecting some radko stuff? well, there is another collection of holiday houses by a company called department 56. you have probably seen the stuff before or your mom owns some of it already. well, john and i went to the holiday store at macy's and absolutely fell in love with the north pole series. our first purchase is the Starlight Dance Hall which is a numbered limited edition. i have a feeling we are going to go crazy building a holiday city. i'm going for the full effect, so i'm getting trees and snow and the whole shebang. yes, another money hole, but at least i can sell it all on ebay when i'm living on ramen noodles and two months late on the rent.

well, the day has finally come. i think the landlord has moved out of our building. yesterday when i came home i noticed that the blinds on her door window were open, so i peeked in. all the furniture was gone. so i went around the back and looked into the back room, nothing there either. what a relief! i am going to call the building manager today just to make sure.
if this is true this means that nathan won't have to move out on the first of november, which will also save us a lot of stress. we had told the landlady that nate would be moving the first but it turns out his job in sf will continue until the end of november. we we're all loathing the idea of asking the landlady if it would be okay if nate stayed a little longer. hopefully this will all work out.

i couldn't agree with keithers more. mtv totally sucks because all it ever shows are mtv series and about 10 minutes of videos (usually the same 10 that are on trl). i was excited to finally get mtv2 with my cable provider, but alas... it's the same crap.at least with the newest digital package i get a bunch of other mtv/vh-1 stations like soul and r&b, though i don't even watch that much.
but g4tv is the shit, controllers down. a 24 hour video game station. i wouldn't have graduated junior high if this station was around when i was a kid.

quiet weekend. friday we went to our pal joel's surprise birthday party. and was he ever surprised! his parents and sister and best friend from college showed up all from the east coast. he was floored. tony and i bought him a playstation 2. this is probably his best birthday ever.
saturday and sunday were big shopping days. as i probably mentioned before, tony is a huge christmas person. we have enough ornaments for three trees. well, i brought him to this store that is the christopher radko starlight store for san francisco. uh-oh. he's going to buy even more... and now i've caught the bug because i think i'm going to start collecting the shiny bright collection of miniature houses and stuff. this winter our house is going to look like the macy's christmas store.

went to see 'some like it hot' last night at the golden gate theater starring mr. tony curtis! the show teetered between horrible and slightly amusing. it was also kind of sad because it was painful watching tony on stage. i mean he's still funny and all, but at times i really thought he had forgotten his lines and there were dance numbers where they went left but he went right. and it wasn't for comedic effect. my MOD grandson, terry has a pal who works for the theater, so he got john, me, gill, eddie, john, joe and a bunch of other guys in for free. and we got orchestra seats in the center to boot! my tony was sick and had to stay home. i really missed not having him there. as a matter of fact, i'm missing him right now. god, i love that man.

go see the doctor...
about 3 years ago i pulled my lower back for the first time. i was laid up for 3 days. i had never experienced anything like that before and boy, did i hate it, but honestly who wouldn't? after that i had pulled it out a couple more times. now i know when it's going to happen. it's that way you turn in your seat and zap! you get that electric shock shooting up your back and down your leg. then you know you better do something or you're a goner. i got that about a month ago, but i immediately fell to the ground and started doing my stretching exercises. it seemed to help because it never developed fully into a pull. but over the past month i've noticed that it hurts when i sit too long, especially when i'm in a car. my hip starts to ache and my leg starts getting numb. tony told me to go to the chiropractor, but the last one i saw was a total quack and did more harm than good (i couldn't turn my head to the left for about 6 months.) but the pain is really getting annoying.
so yesterday i finally gave in and picked a guy out of the list from my health insurance. he's a couple bus stops away from my office. i went and filled out the paperwork and then waited for my appointment. the doctor comes out and introduces himself and then went through a little interview. he seemed to know what he's talking about so i let him work on me. he put me on this mechanical bed thing and put a heat pad on my lower back. then the bed starts flapping my legs around like i'm swimming. but i'm swimming like "the man from atlantis" this goes on for 12 minutes. then he comes back and twists me and sits on me. CRUNCH! my lower back seems relieved. then he flips me the other way and CRUNCH! it sounds like he's walking on a bag of doritos. he said i was in need for that. then he asked if he could check my neck. i trust him so i said okay. he felt around and he says, "this vertebrae is off" and pushes right where i've had the pain from the last doctor's work. he then snaps my neck one way, then the next. this time it sounds like he's smashing a bag of marbles against the wall. then that's it. i'm done. pay my $15 and i'm off. last night i felt sort of weird. no pain, but a little sore. this morning seems okay too. it's weird because theres this thing i do with my neck every morning. i twist it and it cracks, but it doesn't do it anymore - which i guess is a good thing. i have another appointment on friday. i guess i'll see where this goes.

the weekend
had a great one, possums.
saturday was a workday for tony and me. we had a lot of odds and ends we wanted to get done around the house. it was a beautiful day out, so we did get some time outside. but now the leaky faucet in the bathtub is fixed - good feng shui. i expect the dollar bills to come rolling in now. we also did a little shopping.tony bought $275 worth of christmas ornaments (5 of them!). he's a christmas junkie and i love him for it. i bought a cool toy from the mathmos company. it's this glass brick that changes colors when you flip it around. it's rechargeable, so you can play around with it anywhere. yes, a total stoner toy and i love it. i know you want one. here's where you can get one for cheap (i paid $90 but they sell it for $50!) later the MOD guys got together for some movies. lots of fun and also scored some free tix to see "some like it hot" the musical with tony curtis! should be good. tony and i always grunt and groan about going to MOD events (there have been a lot lately) but whenever we get there it's always a great time. i love those guys.
sunday was the castro street fair. if you never been, it's the place you go to when you just have to get one more glass crystal male torso or a rainbow pride water headband/fanny pack. very cheesy but a lot of fun because everyone goes just to hang out and get drunk. tony and i got our picture taken by this guy and about an hour later he came back with a developed print! turns out he works at the photoshop on the corner. i also bought these awesome gucci knockoff sunglasses for $10. they are really cool looking, but have this big 'gucci' etched on the edge of the lens. i got the bling-bling going on. boo-yah!

Patsy and Edina are coming to America.
The two aggressively shallow women of "Absolutely
Fabulous" will make
a one-time return to stateside TV in January for a special airing on Comedy
Central.
The special will follow Patsy (Joanna Lumley) and Edina (Jennifer Saunders)
as they plow their way through New York's fashion week. Parts of the show
were shot during the annual event last month.
hooray!
