so i can't say that today was a total waste, here's a story:
a while back i returned to new york to see my family and friends. they don't live in the city. they live mid-state in duchess county (hopewell junction to be exact). so going home generally sucks. besides seeing the parents i can't stand i have to do it in a town that still has a karoke bar. so i met up with two of my high school friends, leigh and karen and decided to drink some pitchers of beer at the aforementioned bar. we get in and there are about 15 people hanging out. there's a girl on the little stage singing "kiss me deadly" by lita ford. i think you get the picture. we start drinking and decide we should sing a bit. well, singing a bit would be a lie. we wound up taking over and doing a concert. it started with me singing "tainted love" which is in my key. then the 3 of us sang "love shack". it gets worse. after a rousing version of "mony, mony" i told the audience that i wanted to bring it down. i pulled a bar stool onto the stage and went into a soulful version of "if you don't know me by now". then to bring the energy back up i started to sing "enough is enough". it got to the part when the tempo starts to rise and i'm holding that note ("and we won't waste, another... tearrrrrrrrrrrrr) and all of a sudden this black girl in the audience, which has now grown to about 30 people, comes in with the donna summer part! she comes up on stage, grabs a mic and belts it out. the crowd roared and applauded for at least a minute. but i knew they wanted more, so we gave it to them. we then broke into "sweet dreams". leigh sang the melody and i did the harmony. karen (a trained dancer) did interpretive dance behind us the whole time and for the finale' did a cartweel into a split. the crowd was floored. we got free beer for the rest of the night. it was too fantastic.
